MOST ELDERLY WOMEN or premenopausal Women in Nigeria are haunted or affected by Osteoporosis. Some had even outlined it as arthritis, while the educated ones believe that their calcium level must be low. Although there are other reasons why a woman can develop this bone disease but the low mass of calcium is one of the main factors. Nevertheless, research has shown that people above the age of 50; are presumed to be affected by Osteoporosis. One in two women and one in four men have Osteoporosis.

What we know about Osteoporosis

The word Osteoporosis means Porous Bone. It is a medical situation when the bones become feeble or fragile due to the loss of tissues. The hormones changes or deficiency of calcium or vitamin D can result in Osteoporosis. A person with Osteoporosis is at a greater risk for sudden and unusual bone fractures.

Causes of Osteoporosis in Women

Human bone contains living and growing tissues. This tissue looks like a sponge, and the area is called “TRABECULAR.” The outer part is called cortical bone. Our bone serves as a store for calcium, minerals, and protection of our vital organs. The bone breaks down and rebuilds whenever it needs calcium. This process is called Bone Remodeling. In addition, bone metabolism is regularly replacing old bones with new ones. The symptoms of Osteoporosis are not detected until it weakens the bones and causes a severe fracture of the hip, knees, and spine. Low calcium intake contributes to the deterioration of the bone, which in turns result in “holes in the “sponge” to grow larger and more numerous. In the ’20s, Women developed bones faster than they were in 30’s. After the age of 35, the bone breaks down faster than it rebuilds, which results in a gradual loss of bone mass. The rate of bone breakdown occurs even more quickly after menopause.

Symptoms of Osteoporosis

There is no symptom of Osteoporosis. It is detected when women suddenly develop back pain, loss of height overtime, or fractured bones. The disease is described as a silent killer since no one can detect it until it weakens the bones and causes severe pains whenever the person moves around.
