Do you wonder why some businesses collapse within short years of starting the business?

Starting a business is one thing, running and managing the business to achieve the organizational goal is another. Some businesses fail as a result of poor dissemination of information which leads to employees working based on assumptions which automatically brings the business to the zero level.

The importance of effective communication in business can’t be overemphasized because no business can survive outside it.

Effective communication involves the constant flow of information within and outside a company. A business can’t function at its zenith without the proper flow of information within different departments in an organization.

Every business has an organizational goal that they hope to achieve at a stipulated time. When there is good communication, the relationship between managers and their employees, it enables them to work better for the growth of the business. Moreover, it enables the Manager to better instruct and inform their employees on particular tasks, this, in turn, minimizes mistakes resulting from assumptions.

Why should Businesses ensure the free flow of communication in their organizations?

1) It improves Management: Employees are at the centre of every business. They are the ones who deal directly with the customers daily. Hence, managing them effectively becomes the core priority of every organization.

Effective communication enables Managers to identify the best way to relate with their employees to create a favorable environment for working which in turn leads to the growth of the organization. When an employee is happy and motivated, he/she gives her best. This can be done by encouraging them to work hard, rewarding their performance, and investing in their self-development through training.

1) Internal Upward: This is a communication from a subordinate (employee) to a Manager within a company. It usually includes surveys, forms, reports, and memos.

2) Internal Downward: This is from a Manager to a subordinate (employees) within a company. Here, the Manager disseminates information and gives instructions to the employees on what to do and the stipulated time and date to achieve every task.

3) Internal Lateral: This involves employees communicating amongst themselves. Here, they share information and knowledge on how to work together for the growth of the company.

4) External Communication: This is any communication that happens with external parties such as customers, prospects, vendors, or partners.

When an employee doesn’t understand the company’s policy and strategy, it becomes difficult for that employee to work effectively. No employee should be left in the dark, all the changes in the company policies, marketing, and other strategies should be disseminated to everyone working in the organization.

This survey shows the increased percentage of an employee who feels they are left out and those who don’t understand the company’s strategy.

This is because communication wasn’t properly practised, some employees were left in the dark while some were exposed to some information. This act brings discrimination and division as some employees will feel more appreciated than others and this doesn’t write well for the growth of a company.

However, when communication flows openly, employees receive the correct and complete information on how to deliver. They automatically do their best.

The Need to Communicate in Business

This survey shows that when an employee is recognized and appreciated for a work well done, he/she will be motivated to deliver excellently. And this can be achieved when communication is not restricted.

The highest percentage here is of employees who said that they are most motivated when the management offers regular updates on company news.

Like I always say, there is nothing more disastrous to business growth than keeping your employees in the dark. Transparent communication is the act of sharing both good and bad information upward, downward, and laterally in a way that allows all to see the why behind the words.

A workplace with transparent communication is a more collaborative and trustworthy workplace, with information being openly shared between employees and across levels of the organization (Hutchison, 2020, April 8).

Therefore, effective communication within an organization creates a favorable work environment, makes working easier, and maximizes productivity which in turn leads to Business growth.
