The Biography of H.E Chief Dr, Jewel Howard Taylor

VICE PRESIDENT CHIEF DR. JEWEL HOWARD-TAYLOR IS A NATIONALIST, Former First Lady of the Republic of Liberia, an Eminent Citizen, a Devoted Christian. H.E. CHIEF DR. JEWEL HOWARD TAYLOR is a Liberian politician who now serves as the country’s Vice President. She served as Liberia’s First Lady during the administration of President Charles Taylor, her husband whom she married in 1997 and got divorced in 2006. He was the former president of Liberia and a convicted war criminal.

CHIEF VICE PRESIDENT DR. TAYLOR is a Bong County native-born to the Royal Household of Kerkula Giddings of Sanoyea District. During his reign, King Giddings invented the script for the Kpelle language.

Mr. Moses Y. Howard and Mrs. Nora Giddings-Howard, both excellent professional Health Workers who died in service to the people of Bong County and are buried at the Phebe Compound, raised the Vice President as a youngster on the Phebe Hospital Compound.

VICE PRESIDENT CHIEF DR. TAYLOR has her high school diploma and a bachelor’s degree in economics from the College of West Africa and the University of Liberia. Also, a master’s degree in banking and finance from the American Institute of Banking. In Liberia, she studied at Cuttington University’s Masters in Business Administration MBA – Finance Program (Honor Graduate).

She received her law degree from the state-owned University of Liberia’s Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law (Honors Graduate) LLB Law on December 21, 2011.

She also obtained an Honorary Doctorate in Leadership and Governance from St. Clements University College and an Honors Graduate from Liberia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Gabriel L. Dennis Foreign Service Institute.

VICE PRESIDENT CHIEF DR. TAYLOR is a well-known and active stateswoman who advocates for affordable but high-quality education, a transparent justice system, a better and more accessible health system, women’s economic and political engagement, and an accountable public service system.

She has been a crucial voice on cross-cutting issues at many frontlines in the effort to reposition Liberia for vibrancy, productivity, and democratic good governance as one of Liberia’s greatest champions for more and improved opportunities for Liberian women.

The Vice President is known as the Vice President without Boundaries because of her international outlook. Her voice and beliefs are national in scope, even though she represents Bong County specifically.

A public disagreement erupted in Bong County over accolades reportedly bestowed upon her; she was named the new holder of the honorary Bong County title “Madam Suakoko, which celebrates the Suakoko District’s namesake.

Members of the group that allegedly bestowed the title on her quickly refuted the claim, claiming that the gathering at which she was bestowed was a meeting to help county people reconcile political differences. Taylor attempted to propose legislation into the Liberian parliament in February 2012 that would have made homosexual behavior a first-degree felony punishable by the death penalty.

Her Achievements in Politics

The measure was not passed when President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf stated that she would not sign any bill of this nature.

George Weah chose Jewel as his running companion on the newly constituted Coalition (CDC) platform in 2017. After a campaign in late 2017, she was elected as Liberia’s first female Vice President when her party won the elections. As a result of her National impact, Vice President Chief Dr. Taylor has been a recipient of many accolades, Laurels, and Awards from Local, National, and International Organizations, ranging from humanitarian awards to outstanding Leadership awards. Key amongst many of them are: In 2005, she was awarded the Nation’s highest accolade, Knight Great Dame, Order of the Most Venerable Order of the Pioneers, by former President Charles G. Taylor for her devotion to the country as Liberia’s 21st First Lady.

Her Awards

In 2009, she received the National Excellence Award for Philanthropy.

In 2011, she became the first female to be awarded the Distinguished

Traditional Title of Venerable Chief in the National Traditional Council of Liberia, a Chieftaincy title bestowed on her by Traditional Chiefs and Elders of Bong County in recognition of her role in sponsoring a bill that established the National Traditional Council of Liberia; and in full recognition of her exemplary services to the people of Bong, Liberia. Also, the Senator of the Year from several groups in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015. In 2012, she received an African Leadership Award for Outstanding African Female Leader of the Year from the African Leadership Award in Dubai. In 2013, the African Women Leadership Organization (AWLO) in Nigeria honored her as an African Mentor and Role Model with the Outstanding African Women Achievers Award.

In 2014, she was given the Women Advancement Forum Award in the Gambia for her dedication to the liberation, encouragement, and advancement of women worldwide. She received the 2nd Chance International Award as a Woman of Distinction, New York City, USA, in 2015.

In 2016, she received the Women Activist Award for her gender activism and empowerment efforts.

In 2016, he received the Pan African Leadership Excellence and Women Empowerment Award, a Humanitarian Award. In 2016, she was selected Woman of the Year by the West African Philanthropist Organization.

Also, in 2016, she also received the Women’s Activist Award.

The 2016 West African Philanthropy Awards named her Woman of the Year.

VICE PRESIDENT CHIEF DR. TAYLOR is a grass rooter and a strong pillar of the Christian Community; a believer in women empowerment, multiparty democracy, freedom of speech, Human Rights, and the Rule of Law.

As a result of her more than 18 years of experience in both the private and public sectors, she, unlike most politicians of today, has the privilege to cut across political, social, and ethnic lines and has friends and collaborators in all political establishments in Liberia.

Vice President Chief Dr. Taylor remains a strong voice for change and progress in our Nation and an icon for Liberian Women.

Due to her passion and commitment for a better and more equitable Nation for all Liberians, she was often referred to as the “People’s Senator.” In confirmation of this title, Newsweek Magazine voted her the 2nd Most Powerful Female Politician in Liberia in 2011.

Jewel Taylor, a member of the National Patriotic Party, was elected to the Liberian Senate in Bong County in 2005.

Howard Taylor was the Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Gender, Women, and Children’s Health and Social Welfare with a resounding mandate from the people of Bong County to represent their interests, hopes, and aspirations, as evidenced by her election as Senator in 2005 and again in 2014.

Taylor served in the Liberian government as Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Liberia (forerunner to the current Central Bank of Liberia), President of the Agriculture Cooperative and Development Bank (ACDB), and Mortgage Financing Underwriter the First Union National Bank while her husband was president.

She also concentrated on health, educational, and social initiatives.

Even as the current Vice President of the Republic of Liberia and the senior, Ranking Member of the Liberian Senate, Dr. Taylor currently serves in many capacities such as: Chairperson, Women Legislative Caucus of Liberia
